On September 22, 2024, living kidney donor Elizabeth Young competed in the Women’s Ironman World Championship in Nice, France. Young’s participating in the event was sponsored by the National Kidney Registry.
Young donated a kidney to a stranger in 2022. She has completed 12 Ironman competitions, six of them since her donation. She completed the Women’s Ironman World Championship in 15:46:39, placing 1,053rd.
“I was so honored to be an NKR-sponsored athlete at the Ironman World Championships,” said Young. “I wore my NKR custom gear in the days leading up to the race and I had countless conversations about kidney donation. I feel blessed to have been able to share my story with so many people.”
Because Young donated through the NKR’s Family Voucher Program, she was able to name up to five family members as voucher holders. If one of them ever needs a kidney transplant in the future, they can redeem the voucher to be prioritized for a living kidney donor transplant.
