Congratulations to all the athletes who participated in the Donor Games 2024 Championship on Saturday, September 14, at Affinity Athletics in Stamford, Connecticut. It was our best Championship yet, with many new faces and amazing performances.
Women’s Division Results
Mimi Mahon captured her fourth Donor Games Championship win, besting the competition by an even larger margin than in previous years. For 2024, Mimi kicked it up a gear, putting up 175 pounds for a quick 10 points for the Burn & Bench, coming in over a minute faster than her nearest competitor in the Pike, and finally nabbing the top spot in the Heavy Murph, winning all three events in a clean sweep and cruising to first place with 30 points.
Roni Hays came in second for the fourth year in a row with 27 points, capturing second place in all three events. Newcomer Radley West and second-year competitor Janet Walker found themselves in a tie for third with 21 points. They battled it out in a tiebreaker (21 calories on the Echo bike for time), with Radley edging out Janet for third-place honors.
Men’s Division Results
Two donor men were neck-and-neck going into the third event, the Heavy Murph, with Mike Ramsey and Justin King tied for first place. For the Heavy Murph competition, they were placed at workout stations right next to each other to heighten the competition between them. Ultimately, Brandon Cullen bested both of them to take first place, but Mike’s total rep count was enough to secure second place in the final workout and earn him 26 points, elevating him to the top position in his first-ever Donor Games Championship.
Justin ended the competition right behind Mike with 25 points, taking second place overall for the second year in a row. Brandon Cullen’s standout performance in the Heavy Murph earned him the third-place spot on the podium with a total of 23 points. Championship newcomers Kevin Kilkenny and Steve Holmes tied for fourth place with 21 points, deciding to split the cash prize equally on a handshake.
We welcomed several new donors to the Championship this year, two of which were a donor-recipient pair: Brandon Cullen donated a kidney in 2023 to his friend Joe Curry. Also new to the Championship this year were Steve Holmes (donor), Mike Ramsey (donor), Radley West (donor), Molly Cropp (donor), and Nicki Mahon (recipient and mother of Mimi Mahon, who donated her kidney on Nicki’s behalf in 2017). Kevin Kilkenny also notched his first Championship, although he has been participating in Donor Games Open events since the very beginning. All newcomers were wonderful additions to the competitive field, and we hope to see them all next year.
Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to all participants for continuing to demonstrate the amazing fitness of living kidney donors. For more on the 2024 Championship, please visit the Donor Games website.
