Super Murph 2023 Open Recap

The Super Murph 2023 Open, which took place May 10–16, brought the heat and the hurt, with a healthy mix of familiar faces as well as new names atop the leaderboard in this always grueling competition.

First-time participant Thomas Sullivan cruised to a first-place finish in the men’s donor category. After an approved first attempt of 16:23, he increased his lead with a second attempt of 16:08. The fight for second place was fierce. Chris Sullivan posted a strong time of 21:55 on his second attempt, putting him in second place over Justin King. After his second attempt was DQ’d on the last night of the competition, Justin submitted a third attempt, besting Chris with a time of 21:22. The men’s donor category also saw spirited efforts from Jason Elmore and David Ashley. Jason fought through injury to round out the top five while David performed a modified workout at the summit of the United Kingdom’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis.

In the women’s donor category, it was another Mimi Mahon victory with a winning time of 22:36. Mimi continued her dominant run in Donor Games events, avenging her second-place finish in last year’s Super Murph 2022 Open. This marks Mimi’s 10th Donor Games first-place finish. Donor Games veteran Darlene Magsino came in second with a time of 28:23 and Andrea Alejandro rounded out the top three with a 32:36 time.

Recipient regular Scott Claybrook capped off another win with an impressive 22:12 finish. Wilson Du took home second place with a modified workout.

In the women’s general category, there was a new name at the top of the leaderboard, but one that many were already familiar with. Sam Briggs was the 2013 CrossFit Games winner, earning the title of “Fittest Woman on Earth.” Sam posted an incredible time of 14:58 with impeccable pacing and form. It was an honor to have her participate in the Donor Games! Just behind Sam on the leaderboard was Francheska Delgado Peraza at 16:29. After two disqualifications, she showed great fortitude and perseverance, turning in a third competition video with excellent form. 

The general male category was jam packed at the top, with all top five finishes within three minutes and 10 seconds of each other. Nikolaos Kostakis set a blistering pace that lasted all five rounds. With added motivation to defend his Super Murph 2022 Open crown, Nikolaos put up the best time of any participant at 14:03. Newcomer Justus McGuire came in second with a time of 15:23.
